ERAS: An Experiential Role-Playing Aging Simulation

ERAS: An Experiential Role-Playing Aging Simulation
AECT Emerging Learning Technologies Division, 2019 Immersive Learning Award

Context

ERAS is a web-based interactive simulation for learners to engage in role-playing while acquiring knowledge about the aging process. Learners are asked to imagine themselves in the role of elderly individuals and to learn about various age-related issues. This is accomplished through observing the avatar’s reactions, experiencing the associated outcomes, and engaging in decision-making and reflection. This perspective-taking experience aims to increase students’ empathic attitudes toward the elderly and reduce anxiety regarding aging.

Scope

This project was completed in collaboration with a Psychology instructor (subject-matter expert), a researcher, and three instructional designers. The project was fully completed. This project was funded by an institutional grant. ERAS was initially designed with the primary intent of helping students enrolled in an Adulthood & Aging course offered by the Psychology Department at our institution.

ROLE

The instructional design roles I had during this project were: project manager and instructional designer. I conducted the learner, contextual, and task analysis. In collaboration with the, Psychology instructor, I created the project timeline. As the instructional designer, I designed the simulation look, feel, and flow. As the project manager, I served as one of the main contacts for this project and was in regular communication with the subject-matter expert, researcher, and other instructional designers. I also conducted the formative evaluation and re-designed of ERAS.

Nursing Pain Assessment and Management: A 3D Interactive Simulation

Pain Assessment 3D Interactive Simulation

Context

This is a 3D interactive simulation titled “Pain Management for Patients in the Emergency Department.” In this 3D simulation environment you take on the role of an emergency department nurse. You are expected to correctly address each of the pain assessment and management critical path action that will help eradicate the pain complications of the patients.

Scope

This project was completed with the assistance of a subject-matter expert, graphic designer, and a programmer. The project was fully completed. You can see videos related to the design and development of this simulation using this link: Pain Assessment Simulation

ROLE

The instructional design roles I had during this project were: project manager and instructional designer. I conducted the learner, contextual, and task analysis. I created the project timeline. As the instructional designer, I designed the characters, the scripts, and the simulation look and feel. As the project manager, I served as a the main contact person for this project and was in regular communication with the subject-matter expert, graphic designer, and programmer. I also conducted the pilot testing, evaluation, and implementation.

Context

In this infographic, in poster format, I share the results of an investigation focused in undergraduate students' use of social media. The aim of the infographic is to provide an introduction, short literature review, and results of the investigation.

Scope

The infographic was completed using the journal article publication of this investigation as the main source of content. The project was fully completed. You can read the journal article that informs this infographic using this link: 10.1504/IJSMILE.2020.109266

ROLE

The instructional design roles I had during this project were: instructional designer. I created the project timeline. As the instructional designer, I designed the layout, selected the images, and developed the infographic .

Graphic Novel: "New Beginnings"

https://tiny.cc/NewBeginnings
AECT Learner Engagement Division, Outstanding Digital Learning Artifact Award, 2020

Context

The goal of this project is the design of an Open Access interactive graphic novel for English Language Learning, which will include a series of realistic scenarios describing different everyday situations immigrants face as they experience life in the United States. The graphic novel includes three chapters. The chapters cover the following topics: a) interpreting a job ad, b) renting living accommodations and c) identifying key terms in a  pay stub.

Scope

The graphic novel was completed by three instructional designers. Two main designers served as the developers and one as the mentor, reviewer, and evaluator.  The project was fully completed and shared widely with instructors that could incorporate it in their course. The project was featured in the UT Journal Magazine: "Graduate Students Create Graphic Novel to Help Language Learners."

ROLE

The designed roles I had during this project were: project mentor, reviewer, and evaluator. I help create the project timeline. As the mentor, reviewer, and evaluator, I met with two instructional designers every two weeks, I reviewed the storyboards and drafts of the graphic novel, and made suggestions for improvement.
